A new Warkworth community recreation centre based around indoor games and activities is broadening its reach and reducing its fees.
Baskets Plus Recreational Centre opened its doors on August 16 at the Rodney Masonic Lodge hall with the aim of providing activities and companionship for adults and seniors.
However, organiser Jo Kaggwa says it quickly became clear that the centre’s mix of activities, from snooker, table tennis, darts and foosball to puzzles, card games and every type of board game, had a broader appeal.
“When we opened, to our surprise we saw all ages were interested – parents came in with their kids and played,” she said. “So we thought, why not? After all, it’s for the community, so everyone is welcome.”
There have also been tweaks to opening hours and charges, which are made to cover hiring the hall above Westpac in Baxter Street. The centre is currently opening from midday to 4pm from Monday to Saturday, and entrance fees are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and $8 for children aged six to 12, plus family and group options.
Health support worker Kaggwa said hours and days were flexible, however, as the main goal was to relieve stress and provide fun and companionship.
“Hours and days are flexible. If there’s a group that wants to use the game space outside those hours, they can reach out to me,” she said.
